How memes got weaponized: A short history

Memes are propaganda. Without authorship attribution or further context there is no accountability for passing on half truths or outright disinformation. MIT Technology Review has an interesting discussion about memes as misinformation.

Think about whose interests you’re serving when you reshare a meme. The quicker you are to reshare without evaluating something the more likely it’s not in your interest but serving someone else’s.
