Welcome to the Forest of the Weird! Like something out of a Dr. Seuss book, the Deep Discoverer remotely operated vehicle encountered this alien-like community composed almost exclusively of glass sponges with their concave sides directed towards the current while exploring “Ridge” Seamount within the Johnston Atoll Unit of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument.

When exploring the deep, you just never know what you’ll find…
