A More Accurate World Map Wins Prestigious Japanese Design Award

“More accurate” than what? Oh mercator… a 450 year old technique.

This map, as with all flattenings of a sphere, or projections, makes some trade offs in order to preserve an attribute of the map through the distortion process.

This map prioritizes land area. Which is great for many geopolitical and environmental discussions, but it is far from the first map to do it.

Just so we’re clear this map would be terrible for navigation. Mercator is still used because it’s easy to measure distances and thus navigate on…
