Grasping at straws. I thought this was a joke at first. There is zero context provided just “waste!” “premium satellite!” “They only are at sea 3 weeks!” “The military can do it with 6 stations!”
This is particularly offensive because we regularly had discussion about how we were using resources, and whether it was an appropriate and efficient use of tax-payer’s money. We had numerous cut-backs in our funding which made us significantly less cost efficient.
If this is the only waste Sen. Rand Paul can find then I believe the government is doing really well. But the Senator didn’t even ask people in the organization that might know something. If he had asked anyone we could have told him that the most wasteful thing is underfunding the ships. An active commissioned vessel has a daily cost whether it is doing it’s job or sitting alongside the dock. And if the vessel doesn’t have the funding to operate a full season at sea the cost of the data skyrockets.
